Therapist working with child at home

What is In-Home ABA Therapy?

In-home ABA therapy is Applied Behavior Analysis delivered in your residence rather than a clinic setting. A trained Registered Behavior Technician comes to your home and works one-on-one with your child under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

This approach is sometimes called Natural Environment Training because learning happens in the places where skills will actually be used. Instead of teaching a child to make a snack in a pretend kitchen at a clinic, we teach them in your kitchen using your utensils and your food. The skills become real immediately.

Research supports this approach. Studies show that children often learn faster and retain skills longer when instruction occurs in the natural environment. The gap between “knowing how” in therapy and “actually doing” in real life shrinks dramatically.

Why Choose In-Home

Benefits of Home-Based ABA

Natural Environment

Skills are learned exactly where they will be used. Teaching a child to brush teeth in their own bathroom or set the table in their own kitchen makes learning stick.

Comfort and Security

Children often feel more relaxed and open to learning when they are in their own space. This can lead to faster progress and less anxiety around therapy.

Convenience for Families

No driving to appointments means less disruption to your schedule. Siblings can stay home, and therapy fits naturally into your family's routine.

Family Involvement

When therapy happens at home, parents and siblings can observe, learn, and participate. This helps everyone support the child's growth consistently.

A Typical In-Home Session

Arrival and Transition

The RBT arrives and greets your child. They may start with a preferred activity to build rapport and engagement.

Structured Teaching

The therapist works on specific goals from the treatment plan, using positive reinforcement and systematic teaching procedures.

Natural Practice

Skills are practiced in real situations. If working on requesting, the child practices during actual snack time.

Data and Wrap-Up

The therapist records data on progress and may briefly update the parent on what was accomplished.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours per week is typical for in-home ABA?

Hours vary based on your child's needs and insurance authorization. Many children receive between 10 and 40 hours per week. Your BCBA will recommend an intensity level based on assessment results and your family's goals.

Do we need a dedicated space for therapy?

No special room is required. Our therapists work throughout your home wherever skills are naturally needed. We might work in the kitchen during snack time, the bathroom for hygiene skills, or the living room for play skills.

Will the therapist always be the same person?

We prioritize consistency. Each child is assigned a primary RBT who provides most of their sessions. However, having occasional sessions with different staff members can help your child generalize skills to new people.

What if my child has challenging behaviors at home?

This is exactly why in-home therapy can be so effective. Behaviors often happen in specific contexts, and addressing them where they occur leads to faster, more durable change. Our team is trained to handle challenging situations safely and effectively.

Can siblings be involved in sessions?

Absolutely. Many goals involve sibling interaction, such as sharing, taking turns, or playing together. Your BCBA can incorporate siblings into sessions when appropriate and helpful for your child's goals.
